We reported earlier that Samsung had shifted 3m units of its Galaxy Note 2 handset in a month – but Apple has managed to break the same milestone with its latest iPads in just three days.
The iPad Mini and iPad 4, in their wi-fi-only interations, have already sold 3m units in their first weekend — double the amount of third-generation wi-fi iPads sold on launch weekend back in March. 3G-enabled versions of the devices will follow in a few weeks in the US, and later in the year in the rest of the world.
The level of success is surprising, given that there doesnt seem to have been the usual level of Apple anticipation around the twin launches – but, of course, it helps that there are two different devices on sale.
“Customers around the world love the new iPad Mini and fourth generation iPad,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook. “We set a new launch weekend record and practically sold out of iPad minis. Were working hard to build more quickly to meet the incredible demand.”
