Android Takes Majority of US Smartphone Sales from iOS

PhonesThe majority of smartphones sold in the US during the three month period ending November 2013 were Android devices, according to data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.

Android made up 50.3 per cent of smartphones sold, compared to 42.3 per cent during the same period in 2012. The OS has essentially switched positions with iOS, which accounted for 53 per cent of sales a year earlier but 43.1 per cent in 2013.

Meanwhile, Windows Phone nearly doubled its share – from 2.6 per cent to 4.7 per cent – solidifying its position as the USs third largest OS. BlackBerrys share halved dropped to just 0.6 per cent.

“The iPhone 5S and 5C were the two bestselling smartphones in the US for the three months ending November 2013,” said Kantar global strategic insight director Dominic Sunnebo. “However, increased rivalry from Android brands and a resurgence of LG and Nokia has made year-on-year share gains for Apple difficult.”
