Essential has only managed to ship 5,000 units of its smartphone

Essential PhoneAndroid co-creator Andy Rubin’s Essential Products has reportedly only managed to sell 5,000 Essential Phones through Sprint since the device arrived on the market earlier this month.

According to estimates from smartphone sales data company Baystreet Research, which were first reported by Fierce Wireless, the company has struggled to get its phone into the hands of consumers and well-behind those that it’s supposed to be competing with.

It’s important to note that Baystreet’s estimates only relates to those that have bought an Essential Phone from a retailer as opposed to when a retailer buys the product from the company. Sprint is the exclusive carrier for the phone, through Essential does offer an unlocked version of the device.

Essential has received backing from some big names, including the likes of Amazon and Tencent. Last month, it received $300m (£231m at the time) in a funding round led by an $100m investment from Access Technology Ventures, the venture capital arm of Access Industries, owner of Warner Music Group. The remainder was covered by Amazon’s Alexa Fund, Tencent Holdings, Redpoint Ventures, Altimeter Capital, and Vy Capital.
