As the early adopters tire of mainstream mobile manufacturers, with mums and nans everywhere getting their hands on once-exclusive hardware, two young entrepreneurs are hoping to become the next big thing.
The Adzero handset, designed by London graduate Kieron-Scott Woodhouse, has become the first phone to be launched at Droidcon and the device has high-end specs comparable to the S3.
It is Quadcore, has 16GB internal memory and a HD screen. The casing is made from bamboo, which means it is incredibly light for a device of its power. The device is apparently hacker-friendly, and developers will be able to choose between the lightweight ADAOS operating system or stock Android OS.
“The idea was to bring a breath of fresh air into the mobile industry in terms of material as well as technological innovation,” said Woodhouse. “As a designer, its important that a product tells a strong story and I think bamboo does that. Not only does every phone has a different grain, but over time, it will tell the story of the usage – like an old piece of furniture.”
Adzero will be one of the first projects to be launched on Kickstarter when the crowd-sourcing platform goes live in the UK next week. The phone would retail at £700, but investors will be able to get their hands on it for £500. It currently has 600 beta users.
“Android has made it very possible for the small guys to do hardware,” said COO Jerry Lao. “VCs dont usually invest in it, the risk is higher and there so many low-risk oppportunities out there at the mometn with mass take up of app development and web services.
Woodhouse added: “To start a phone company, you probably need 100 times the amount of investment than for a web start-up.”
At just 24 and 25-years-old, the pair are among the youngest mobile phone manufacturers in the world.
