The mobile payments space is hotting up. After Google, Orange, Barclaycard, the Mobile Money Network and others showed their hand last year, barely a week seems to go by without another new service launch.
Recent weeks have seen the launch of Barclays’ PingIt mobile money-sending application; the Post Office’s contactless NFC payment platform; PayPal Here, which enables merchants to take credit card payments on their phone; and Mastercard’s mobile payment offering in Hungary, which enables users to pay for goods by using their phone to scan QR codes. Earlier this week, RBS and Nat West launched a service in the UK that enables account holders to withdraw money from ATMs using their smartphone, an app, and a unique 6-digit code that they enter into the cashpoint. And yesterday, Mastercard and PrePay Solutions announced plans for a prepaid mobile payments platform that’s due to launch in the autumn.
Next Wednesday, 20 June, at 4pm UK time, the latest one-hour webinar in our ‘Making Sense of Mobile’ series, ‘Making Sense of Mobile Payments’ will examine these and other developments in the mobile payments space, in an attempt to cut through the hype and examine which mobile payment initiatives have the legs to succeed.
