NFC SIM Launches in Hong Kong

NFC handset owners in Hong Kong are one step closer to being able to leave their wallet at home when travelling and shopping in the region as a number of payments players trial NFC payments.

Users will be able to tap their phone on Octopus contacless POS terminals to pay for travel tickets and parking, at food and beverages outlets and for entrance tickets at entertainment venues.

The SIM-based system has been created through a deal between Hong Kong’s PCCW-HKT mobile operator, Sony and NTT Docomo, who developed the FeliCa contactless tech in Japan, Octopus, which makes contactless cards, and Gemalto, who have created the SIM.

There are 23m people already using Octopus contactless smartcards.
