payvia Offers Mobile Payments for Feature Phone Browsers

Mobile payments company payvia has announced a partnership with the Mobile-XL feature phone browser so operators can offer direct carrier billing to unbanked customers in emerging markets.

Mobile-XL already enables millions of people in Africa and Asia to access services like Facebook, Twitter, email, news, sports and games via its SMS portal. It is also directly connected to carriers including Orange, MTN, Vodafone and Etisalat. Users will be able to make two-click payments from their pre-paid carrier airtime.

“With over 800m mobile subscribers in Africa alone, fewer than one-third of whom have access to traditional banking or credit card solutions, we believe that payvia’s technology will soon be the preferred way for both consumers and merchants to buy and sell digital goods throughout Africa,” said Darcy Wedd, CEO, payvia.
