Sony has announced its entry into the tablet market with the launch of its Tablet S and Tablet P models.
The Sony Tablet S will be available from mid-September. It is a 9.4-inch touchscreen tablet powered by the NVIDIA Tegra 2 mobile processor. It boasts an asymmetric design that Sony says “conveys a sense of lightnesss for hours of comfortable use”. A WiFi/3G version of the Tablet S will be available in November.
The other model, the Sony Tablet P, offers a dual-screen folding design, and is geared towards mobile combination, says the company.
Both WiFi models are powered by Android 3.1, and will be upgradable to 3.2. The WiFi/3G models, released later, will have Android 3.2 preinstalled.
Both models feature Sonys TruBlack technology – which reduces screen glare.
Sony has also built some entertainment options into its tablets. Both models offer access to the Sony Entertainment Network, including Video Unlimited, which will offer a range of movies and TV episodes available for download. A limited promotional content offer will be introduced at the device launch.
The tablets will also feature Music Unlimited, Sonys cloud-based digital music streaming service.
Sony Tablet models are also PlayStation certified, meaning that original PlayStation games will be made available for the devices. There will also be a Reader Store, selling downloadable books, newspapers, and magazines. This will be operational by the end of October, says Sony.
The Tablets also come with Personal Space, a new free service that allows you to share pictures and videos stored on the device with friends.
Sony also says it has cross-device connectivity options which can stream content from the tablet to any DLNA-compatible TV or other device. You can also use the device as a remote control for Sony BRAVIA TVs.
Sony Tablet S will be available in the UK from Sony Centres, Currys, PC World, and John Lewis from mid-September 2011. They can be preordered now. Sony Tablet P will be available from November 2011.
