The End of Flat Rate – Your Thoughts Please

Was O2 right in announcing an end to unlimited data plans? The operator had certainly experienced at first hand the problems that can ensue when you marry low-cost mobile data to a very sophisticated handset like the iPhone. And after listening to the complaints of customers fed up with poor network coverage in urban areas, particularly London, it acted last week to do something about it.

From 24 June, when O2 launches the iPhone, the network will launch three new data bundles for new and upgrading customers, all including unlimited texts, and a fixed amount of data. Once that allowance is used up, if they want more, they’ll have to pay for it.

But was O2 justified in its decision, or should it have given flat-rate more of a chance, given that many people still don’t have a flat-rate tariff, and after O2’s move, maybe never will.
