The Filter, the nifty music recommendation application for MP3 players, is coming to the mobile phone. Exabre, the company behind the program, says it will be available for Series 60 Nokia handsets from 9 February, with versions for other phones following shortly after.
The Filter was initially launched for the PC last year, and has had great feedback from users. It only works with iTunes, but given the ubiquity of the iPod, that wont worry most people. Its backed by a team that includes ex-Genesis frontman Peter Gabriel and founder of European digital music pioneer OD2, (now owned by Nokia) Charles Grimsdale.
The Filter makes navigating a mobile phone music collection quick and easy. Once the application has been uploaded, the user simply highlights a couple of songs that typify what they want to listen to from their iTunes library, and The Filter will generate a playlist that suits the mood they are in. Multiple playlists can be created for different activities, such as going to work, jogging etc. Alternatively, if the user is are listening to an artist, fancies something different but doesnt know what, The Filter can recommend another five artists to listen to.
The Filter works by scanning the library and analysing the users tastes in music. The more its used, the better it gets at judging the users tastes and moods, and the better its recommendations become.
The program will be available free for a limited period via The Filter website from 9 February.
