Virgin Offers Free Calls and TV Anywhere

Virgin Media has been making a huge play for the nation’s hearts of late, with ad campaigns featuring Olympic favourites Mo Farrah and Usain Bolt. They have now launched two services to make sure Virgin is not only in your heart, but also in your home and your pocket.

The Smartcall wi-fi app enables Virgin home phone customers to use their unlimited calls on their smartphone as long as they have a wi-fi connection – no matter what mobile network they are with or even if they are abroad.

The app automatically detects whether a SmartCall is possible, which could spell an end to massive roaming call charges and surprise bills.

The service is still being trialled but Virgin says it will be available to all its Virgin Phone customers in early 2013. Along with this, Virgin Media is making unlimited calls to all UK mobiles free for the first time as part of their landline package.

TV anywhere
Virgin Media has also launched the free Virgin TV Anywhere app for its TiVo users, along with a cloud-based web service for all Virgin TV customers to watch OnDemand or catch-up content across tablets and smartphones. The app is initially only available on iOS.

The company says that its customers will be able to use this with the Virgin public wi-fi available on the London Underground – not that many people want to stick around on the platform long enough to watch an episode of House…
