comScore has released its monthly data dump from is mobiLens service, for the three month period ending in July.
Operating systems
Over the period, Android continued to cement its position as the leading OS in the US, as its market share grew 1.4 per cent, to a total 52.2 per cent.
In second place, meanwhile, Apples share grew even more, up two per cent, to a 33.4 per cent share. That growth came at the expense of the other players in the OS market – particularly RIM, which saw its market share drop by 2.2 per cent, down to 9.5 per cent.
Manufacturers
With 25.6 per cent of all US mobile subscribers using one of its handsets, Samsung maintained its place as the leading manufacturer over the period.
Its share fell slightly, however, by 0.3 per cent, as did the number two manufacturer, LG – down by 0.8 per cent – as Apple grew its share by 1.9 per cent, to 16.3 per cent.
Users and usage
More than 114m people in US now own smartphones – an increase of seven per cent since April. Thats nearly half of the entire US mobile userbase, which reached 234m during the period.
MobiLens also examines how subscribers are using their mobile – text messaging is still the most popular activity on US mobiles, and growing, with 75.6 of all mobile subscribers using SMS.
Both apps and the mobile web are used by over half of the mobile population. App usage – which grew 2.4 per cent, to 50.2 per cent of all subscribers – is slightly outpacing of the mobile web – up 2.2 per cent, to a total 51.2 per cent.
