Yahoo Makes a Fantasy Signing

Jerry Shen, the Silicon Valley startup founder behind Bignoggins, whose products include Fantasy Monster and Draft Monster, has joined Yahoo’s Sport platform.

The tech behind Shen’s fantasy sports apps, which became top paid for sport apps in the iTunes store after receiving more than 1m downloads, will be integrated into Yahoo’s existing mobile sports offer.

Shen said: “You’ll be able to enjoy all the features you’ve grown to love, such as mock and live drafts from your mobile device. I predict office pools will be taken to a new level this season as many discover the joys of drafting behind corporate firewalls.”

We spoke to Michael Nuiforo, futurist and mobile consultant at Keatan, about Yahoo’s host of mobile acquisitions. “I think it’s fantastic. They’re not going to die wondering. I think they’ve been able to get out of a rut and at least now the momentum is heading in the right direction,” he said.

“They’re getting a lot of positive media about it and they’re trying to go out there and identify strategic segments and technologies that will help them grow. They’re not playing short-term.

“Often you see organisations of that size that have grown quite rapidly and as soon as they get on a downward trend they really go down,” he said. “I’m hopeful that yahoo can take advantage of some of their recent purchases to bridge that longer term.”
