Samsung will reportedly keep its awkwardly placed fingerprint sensor on both the Galaxy Note 8 – which, though already leaked,  is to be officially unveiled later this month – and the Galaxy S9. However, it is likely it will implement an under-display fingerprint sensor in the Galaxy Note 9.

According KGI Securities, as reported by 9to5Google, Samsung has no reason to risk introducing an in-display fingerprint scanner at any point before the Note 9 – as Apple has ditched the idea of implementing the same feature in the upcoming iPhone 8.

“Since OLED iPhone has cancelled under-display fingerprint recognition/touch ID function, and as Galaxy S9 will have the new selling points of upgraded iris recognition and dual camera, Samsung has no need to risk adopting under-display optical fingerprint solution in a hurry,” says KGI’s note.

With the Galaxy S8, the decision to move the fingerprint sensor to the back of the device was made very late in the day – as Samsung had already removed the home button, and was keen on the idea of an under-display sensor but failed to make it work.

Now, however, it seems Samsung is content with the much-criticised position of the sensor and will keep it there for a few more of its devices.
