First Great Western has added mTicket purchases to its app, enabling users to buy select advance tickets and then simply flash the mobile barcode generated in the app in place of collecting a paper one.
The update is available across iOS, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone, and the company says it hopes mTicketing will reduce queueing times at train stations.
The update has been made by Masabi, whose mTicketing solution has already been deployed in the likes of San Diego, Massachusetts and Boston.
Routes where this service can be used include those to and from London Paddington, Bath Spa, Bristol, Exeter, Oxford, Plymouth, Penzance, Cardiff, Swindon and Reading. Customers can still buy tickets for other services from the app and collect printed tickets, as well as check train times and view purchase history.
