HTC faces backlash over ads on phone keyboard

HTC 10 TouchPal keyboard adHTC has come under fire from users after an ‘error’ resulted in ads popping up on the keyboard of some of its phones.

The problem struck people with HTC 10 phones, which has third-party keyboard TouchPal preinstalled as the default typing app of choice instead of creating its own keyboard like Samsung, Apple or LG. TouchPal’s standalone free version does show ads, however, HTC says its deal was to keep ads off the version installed in the HTC 10.

“Due to an error, some HTC customers have reported seeing ads on their phones keyboard,” said HTC in a statement. “This is absolutely not the experience we intended, and were working to immediately fix the error and remove the ads as quickly as possible.”

TouchPal claimed the issue was down to server problems but this hasn’t stopped users on Reddit launching a barrage of abuse toward both HTC and TouchPal, with many saying they have decided to jump ship to rival keyboards SwiftKey and Google’s GBoard.
