Tesco Mobile launches initiative to boost parent-child online safety talks

Tesco Mobile has teamed up with The Café to introduce a new initiative focused on fostering meaningful discussions about online safety between parents and their children.

Research conducted by the network provider revealed that although 74% of parents prioritise their child’s online safety, one in 10 admits to knowing little about their children’s online activities.

The study also shows that mealtimes are key moments for connection, with 67% of parents learning more about their child’s life during these times and 84% labeling it as ‘quality time.’

Meanwhile, parents often find certain topics challenging to address, with 28% ranking online experiences as one of the hardest subjects to discuss, even more difficult than romantic relationships (25%).

To help close this communication gap, Tesco Mobile has created conversation starters aimed at facilitating approachable discussions during teatime.

“We are delighted to partner with Tesco Mobile on this initiative to empower families to have open dialogue around online safety,” said Rachel Huggins, co-CEO of Internet Matters.

“At Internet Matters, we know that while many parents want to talk about their children’s online experiences, finding the right words or timing can be difficult.

“With regular and open communication being crucial for managing children’s digital habits, these conversation starters offer parents a way to initiate essential conversations, ensuring children feel supported and informed in their online world.”

“As parents, we’re continually facing new challenges, and keeping children safe online is one of the most significant. We created these conversation starters to make these difficult topics easier for families to approach,” Tesco Mobile Sally Marriott, said.

The campaign, led by former member of The Saturdays and TV personality Frankie Bridge, offers parents the chance to access these prompts by searching ‘Tesco Mobile Online Safety’ or scanning QR codes found on ‘table talkers’ in The Café outlets across the UK.

Bridge commented: “Honestly, I do consider myself pretty internet savvy, but when it comes to my kids, it’s a whole different world. The conversation starters really help me figure out where to begin that chat with them.”
