BBC World Service Goes Mobile

The BBC World Service has launched mobile-optimised sites for its Indonesian and Hausa news sites.

The sites leverage responsive design, but dont fully embrace it. The pages are designed around separate modules which rearrange to the screen size, but still use a separate m. URL. The desktop pages have not changed

“These are milestones in the digital development of BBC World Service. This technology – already adopted on the BBC’s international news website – unlocks our ability to deliver the very best mobile user experience, said James Montgomery, controller of digital and technology at BBC Global NewsIt is particularly well suited for BBC World Service, whose audiences use a huge variety of handset types to access our content, from the newest smartphones to low-tech feature phones.”

The BBC says it will be launching a responsive design for its Russian-language news site in February, thought its unclear whether this will be fully responsive, or also rely on separate mobile and desktop pages.
