As 2016 draws to a close, Facebook has released its annual ‘Year in Review’ – just to remind how bad the past year has been across the globe. This year it looks at the most talked-about global topics – and, for the first time, the top 10 videos streamed on Facebook Live – between 1 January and 27 November.
The most viewed live video was Candace Payne’s ‘Chewbacca Mom’, which has totalled 162m views since it was posted in May, with musician Ted Yoders rendition of Everybody Wants to Rule the World on the hammered dulcimer, with 85m. These individual users currently beat out major publishers like Buzzfeed, NBC and CNN, all of which appear in the top 10, mixed in with social publishers (Viral Thread, Super Deluxe), independent reporters (Atlanta Buzz) and even a local radio talk show (Under the Hood).
Topping the list of the most talked-about topics was, unsurprisingly, the controversial US presidential election – which sparked an enormous amount global engagement right up until Trump’s victory, and was the topic of four out of the top 10 live videos.
The second most popular topic was Brazilian politics, as President Dilma Rousseff was removed from office in August, followed by app sensation Pokémon Go and the Black Lives Matter movement. Rounding out the top 10 are two other political stories (the Philippine presidential election and the Brexit referendum), two sporting events (the Olympics and Super Bowl) and two celebrity deaths (David Bowie and Muhammad Ali).
Alongside the global Year in Review, Facebook has launched a tool for users to look at and share their own year, if they need reminding of that time they had a little too much to drink, did something overly embarrassing – or, possibly, actually something nice like the birth of a child.
