In total, 301.3m smartphones were shipped worldwide during the quarter, a year-on-year increase of 25.3 per cent, according to an IDC report – and 96.4 per cent of these ran on either Android or iOS.
This was driven by a 33.3 per cent increase in shipments of Android handsets, which totalled 255.3m. Thats 84.7 per cent of all units, nearly double the market share Android held three years ago.
By comparison, Apple shipped 35.2m iPhones in Q2, giving iOS a market share of 11.7 per cent. Every other OS saw a drop in shipments, with Windows Phone down 9.4 per cent, to 7.4m units, and BlackBerry down 78 per cent, to 1.5m.
“With many of its OEM partners focusing on the sub-$200 segments, Android has been reaping huge gains within emerging markets,” said Ramon Llamas, IDC research manager. “During the second quarter, 58.6% of all Android smartphone shipments worldwide cost less than $200 off contract, making them very attractive compared to other devices. With the recent introduction of Android One, in which Google offers reference designs below $100 to Android OEMs, the proportion of sub-$200 volumes will climb even higher.”
