The Square Card Reader is now available at Verizon Wireless stores across the US. Small business owners can pick one up for $9.97, with $10 Square credit pre-loaded, for use with their iOS or Android handsets. After downloading the Square app, the user completes a sign-up process and links the service to their bank account – and hey presto!
Customers swipe their card on the reader and sign to complete transactions. An email or text receipt can then be sent to them. The service promises no contracts, minimum transations or set-up fees. Payments are charged at 2.75 percent for swiped payments and 3.5 percent plus 15 cents for sales that are manually keyed in.
