Target agrees to buy same-day delivery startup as it steps up Amazon fight

TargetUS discount retailer Target is looking to step up its game, as Amazon continues to its journey to take over the retail sector, with the purchase of local and same-day delivery software company Grand Junction.

Target has agreed to acquire the San Francisco-based startup that links retailers and other distributors to a network of more than 700 carriers across North America. It also already handles a same-day delivery service for Target’s store in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighbourhood.

“Grand Junction’s technology and algorithms will help Target deliver to guests faster and more efficiently,” said Arthur Valdez, executive vice presiden and chief supply chain & logistics officer at Target. “This acquisition is part of Target’s ongoing efforts to strengthen Target’s supply chain to provide greater speed, reliability and convenience for guests.”

The amount set to be paid by Target has not been disclosed but Grand Junction’s 13 employees will relocate to Target’s San Francisco office. According to Valdez, Target will expand its same-day delivery service to other New York City stores by October, before rolling out to other US cities next year.
