Cable and Wireless Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) has announced the completion of its 4G LTE rollout across the countrys four most populated Islands.
The company, which has no competition in The Bahamas, aims to follow this with coverage for the rest of the country. This includes 700 islands, although many of these are uninhabited.
BTC has a 15-year licence to provide LTE mobile broadband on the 700 MHz frequency, the same spectrum as is used in the US, ensuring handset compatibility.
BTC has outlined that download speeds will reach 10 – 15 megabits per second in normal circumstances. This is not quite the speed that should be expected of true 4G but is a five-fold increase on previous infrastructure and will enable video calling and the streaming of HD video.
The Bahamas follows other Caribbean countries like Haiti in adopting high-speed mobile internet. Countries in this region are much less likely to have wired infrastructure.
