Awards Preview – Tablet App

As the date for the Effective Mobile Marketing Awards Ceremony approaches, we continue our preview of the Awards finalists today with a look at the nominees in the Most Effective Tablet Application category.

First up is Compsoft for iPresent. This is a neat solution that enables sales teams to put presentations, white papers, videos and other sales material on to the iPad in a format in which they can be easily accessed for presenting to clients and prospects on the iPad. It’s all achieved via an intuitive content management system, and presentations can be easily updated and distributed to the entire sales force so that they are always presenting the most up-to-date content.

The second contender is the Design Museum and Twentysix Digital for the Design Museum: The Collection for iPad app. This is a great-looking app showcasing selected items for the museum’s collection, including everything from furniture to electronic gadgets. The 2-way horizontal and vertical swipe navigation interface is beautiful, as is the photography. The information on each object, including a written description, plus a video commentary from Design Museum director, Deyan Sudjic, is pretty good too.

Hotels.com is in the running for its iPad app, which makes the process of booking a hotel on your iPad a breeze. The app is as smart and intuitive to use as the smartphone version, but on the iPad, it just looks even better.

Next up in this category are Sky News Saudi Arabia and IMImobile for the Sky News Arabia iPad app. This is another good-looking app that exploits the iPad’s capabilities to the full. It delivers Arabic-language breaking news videos and articles by geographical region or category, including sport, business and technology, boasting an intuitive user interface, including a rotating photo carousel that allows users to select news articles and live-streaming news videos in a 3D environment. The app also offers instant access to a live stream of the Sky News on Arabia channel, accessible through the app interface via 3G or wi-fi.

The fifth contender is Wienerberger and its app development partner, Sync Interactive, for the Wienerberger Brick Selector. Wienerberger makes bricks. In fact, the company is the world’s largest brick maker. The app helps builders, architects and anyone else who need to, to navigate the company’s huge selection of bricks, filtering the choice by style, texture, colour, pattern and shade, and with the ability to compare multiple bricks, with detailed technical specifications, including size tolerances, water absorption and durability. On top of all this, the app looks simply gorgeous.

The final contender in the Tablet App category is XS2 and Yune for the NS Royal Waiting Rooms app. This app enables users to experience the Royal Waiting Rooms at the Dutch Railway Stations in Amsterdam and Den Haag. The Waiting Rooms opened their doors to the public for the first time in 2012 following extensive renovation. But they were only open for a short window. The app was designed to enable anyone to experience them through the wizardry of Augmented Reality (AR) technology.

Using the natural movement of the iPad, the user can manoeuvre their way through the rooms. Hotspots provide additional on-screen information about specific items and the high definition imagery allows the user to zoom in and view the fine details that decorate the rooms, just as you would in a museum.

Another very strong line up then. The winner will be announced at the Awards Ceremony, which takes place on 29 November at the London Film Museum on the site of County Hall on South Bank, a stones throw from the London Eye. The event is almost sold out, but there are still a couple of tables left. To book your place, contact Lisa Slavin by email or telephone +44 (0) 20 7183 5285. Individual seats cost £250; a table of 10 costs £2,150.
