Apple has partnered with USA Technologies to bring Apple Pay functionality to 200,000 vending machines, automated laundry equipment, parking meters and other self-serve retail appliances across the US.
“We anticipate that the millions of consumers who frequent these locations will appreciate the convenience and security of using Apple Pay for their everyday purchases, and we believe that Apple Pay will help to drive additional sales for our customers,” said Stephen Herbert, CEO of USA Technologies. “We recognised early on the potential for mobile payment, and promoted the technology to ensure our customers were ready for this shift to occur.”
USA Technologies began building NFC into its products a decade ago, and has since seen a steady increase in the sales of its ePort cashless payments technologies for unattended retail appliances such as vending machines.
Since its launch last October, Apple Pay seems to be increasingly gaining traction in the US. During Apples Q1 earnings call, CEO Tim Cook announced that Apple Pay now accounted for two-thirds of all contactless purchases on Visa, MasterCard, and American Express.
