Intel may have missed out on PlayStation 6 chip contract to AMD

In 2022, Intel is said to have lost a significant contract to supply chips for Sony’s next-generation PlayStation 6 to Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).

The missed opportunity was valued at an estimated $30 billion in potential revenue.

Sources cited by Reuters revealed that the breakdown occurred due to disagreements between Intel and Sony over the revenue Intel would earn per chip.

Intel’s internal projections suggested that the contract could have generated approximately $30 billion through Sony’s gaming division.

Reuters also pointed out that this deal could have significantly bolstered Intel’s newly established foundry division, which officially began operations earlier this year.

An Intel spokesperson responded to these reports, stating: “We strongly disagree with the characterisation but are not going to comment about any current or potential customer conversations.

“We have a very healthy customer pipeline across both our product and foundry business, and we are squarely focused on innovating to meet their needs.”

AMD has been partnering with Sony since 2014, having designed custom chips for both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
