All iPhones and iPads affected by Meltdown and Spectre, says Apple

iPhoneFollowing the revelation that serious security flaws have been discovered in processors designed by Intel, AMD, and ARM, Apple has confirmed that all of its iPhones, iPads, and Macs are affected.

According to the tech giant, despite the issues being present, there have been no known exploits to hit any Apple product users so far. It urges users to only download software from trusted sources, i.e. the App Store, and has already released ‘mitigations against one of the flaws in its latest iPhone and iPad operating system updates.

The two security issues, dubbed ‘Meltdown’ and ‘Spectre’, affect nearly every modern computing device – including smartphones, tablets, and PCs. The vulnerabilities were uncovered by Jann Horn, a researcher at Google’s Project Zero, along with academic researchers across the world.

Meltdown – which may affect desktop, laptops, and cloud computers – can be found on the vast majority of processors designed by Intel since 1995, except for its Itanium and Atom processors before 2013. The bug ‘melts’ down security boundaries, enabling applications to access system memory. It is not yet clear if the issue exists on AMD and ARM processors also.

Meanwhile, Spectre affects desktops, laptops, cloud servers, and smartphones. This bug – found on Intel, AMD, and ARM processors – tricks error-free programs into leaking secret information. This flaw is more difficult to take advantage of than Meltdown, but is also a lot harder to fix.
