Alphabet introduces unit dedicated to tackling cybercrime

Alphabet X ChronicleGoogle’s parent company Alphabet has introduced an independent business unit aimed at tackling cybercrime by helping companies discover and stop attacks before they can cause any damage.

The cybersecurity unit, named ‘Chronicle’ and founded out of Alphabet’s X moonshot factory, will be made up of a cybersecurity and analytics platform to help enterprises gain a better understanding of their own security-related data, and VirusTotal – the antivirus and online scan aggregator acquired by Google in 2012.

“We want to 10x the speed and impact of security teams’ work by making it much easier, faster and more cost-effective for them to capture and analyse security signals that have previously been too difficult and expensive to find,” said Stephen Gillett, CEO of Chronicle, in a Medium post. “We are building our intelligence and analytics platform to solve this problem.

“Add in some machine learning and better search capabilities, and we think we’ll be able to help organisations see their full security picture in much higher fidelity than they currently can.”

Chronicle is currently testing a preview release of its cybersecurity intelligence platform in an early alpha program with a number of Fortune 500 companies.
