Facebook has reached the milestone of 2bn monthly users – meaning it has managed to double its userbase in less than five years.
The social network hit 500m users in July 2010, and passed the 1bn mark in October 2012. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been open about Facebooks aim to reach all 7bn people on earth, including those currently without internet access.
“We still have a long way to go to connect everyone,” Zuckerberg said, in the comments on his announcement of the milestone. “But we must do more than just connect – we must bring people closer together.”
In case there was any doubt, this cements Facebook as the worlds biggest social service, ahead of YouTube, which announced it had reached 1.5bn monthly logged-in users last week. The only other real competition for the top spot comes from other services owned by Facebook – WhatsApp (1.2bn), Facebook Messenger (1.2bn) and Instagram (700m).
Theres no official word on how many of those 2bn users are accessing Facebook on mobile – but based on the figures it shared in its Q4 2016 report, the number is likely to be around the 1.9bn mark.
