Googles prototype smart glasses are to get an overhaul in the shape of a new Intel-powered chip next year, as part of Intels push into the wearables market.
The Intel chip will replace the Texas Instruments processor currently powering Google Glass, and hopes to drive uptake of the device in the medical and manufacturing sectors, according to reports in The Wall Street Journal.
Intel has previously attempted to venture into the wearables market with its MICA wristband, smart bracelets produced in collaboration with Opening Ceremony, and a partnership with Fossil aimed at producing a fashion-focused smartwatch.
With Glass still in its testing period, used only by explorers who have been approved by Google, theres no way of knowing if Intels involvement will help transform the smart glasses into a true consumer product.
