Highlights of Our Mobile Sites Webinar

Our Making Sense of Mobile Sites webinar has just wrapped up. With nearly 200 sign-ups, and a great range of speakers, the event was a great success – so we thought it only fair to share some of what we learned with you.

First up, Stephan Haux, Netbiscuits director, product management, gave an overview of the topic, talking about the mobile sites versus apps debate, designing for various screen sizes, and the fragmented mobile landscape – and whether HTML5 can draw it all together.

Next, Silvio Porcellana, mob.is.it CEO and founder, ran through the fundamentals of designing for the mobile web, focusing on ICE – thats Information, Contact and Engagement. He also shared a few interesting stats, including that there are 1.2bn mobile web users in the world, currently making up 8.5 per cent of internet traffic.

Philip Clement, sales and marketing director at bemoko, looked quickly over the history of mobile, and discussed how we can use that to predict its future, in a industry where everything is constantly changing.

Finally, Googles online conversation expert Shane Cassells explained the mission statement for the GoMo and GetMo initiatives, which encourage companies to mobilise their site. He looked at a range of case studies, from RACs very functional, basic approach to a mobile landing page, to the full transactional site offered by New Look.

We then threw the floor open, putting questions from attendees to the panellists – on all matter of topics including how to identify handsets, the wider effects of backwards compability, 4G, and whether or not to build tablet-optimised sites – which led to a lot of harmonious agreement, and certain amount of disagreement, between between the panellists.

If you want to find out more about any of these topics, a recording of the webinar will be made available shortly. And if the format sounds too good to miss again, dont forget to register for our next webinar, Making Sense of Mobile Apps, taking place on Wednesday 18 April at 16:00 GMT.
