Huawei unveils 5G foldable smartphone to challenge Samsung Galaxy Fold

Huawei Mate XChinese smartphone maker Huawei has unveiled a pricey 5G phone with a folding screen less than a week after its rival, Samsung, announced a foldable smartphone of its own.

The Huawei Mate X, which was introduced at MWC in Barcelona, will be priced at an eye-watering €2,299 (£1,995). It features an OLED display, which covers both sides of the device, and has a 6.6-inch front panel and 6.38-inch back panel when folded. When unfolded face-out to become more tablet-like, the screen size increases to 8-inches. In terms of memory, there’s an 8GB RAM and 512GB of storage.

The 11mm thick device has a strip on one edge that contains a quadruple Leica camera system, which includes a 40-megapixel wide angle lens, a 16-megapixel ultra wide angle lens, and an 8-megapixel telephoto.

The Huawei Mate X is expected to be released by the middle of 2019, but unlikely to be released in the US at least at first.

In comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Fold’s screen is 4.6-inches folded and 7.3-inches unfolded, while it’s 17mm when closed. It has a 12GB RAM, 512GB storage, and six cameras, but opens like a book unlike the Mate X. It also comes in cheaper at $1,980 (£1500) and has a set date for sale of 26 April.
