IBM Serves Up A High-Powered Mobile Experience for Wimbledon

Hill Vs WorldIBM has unveiled a range of technology innovations it will be bringing to The 2014 Championships at Wimbledon, including a new mobile experience for fans and a Social Command Centre platform for the comms team.

The 2014 Championships at Wimbledon will mark the 25th year of partnership between IBM and the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), and IBM is marking the anniversary by revealing a series of moves designed to bring fans closer to the action.

An updated Official Wimbledon app for iOS and Android forms the centre of the new offering, with new functionality for the iPad app, comprehensive coverage across mobile and tablets, personalised newsfeeds, and easier access to live scores, results, video coverage and more.

IBM has also enhanced its SlamTracker interface, a multifaceted digital presence for Wimbledon fans that provides historical and real-time data to add depth and context to fans Championship experience. SlamTrackers Keys to the Match predictive analytics is designed to offer fans easily-digested insights into matches.

In addition, IBM has provided the AELTC with a new Social Command Centre for The Championships, enabling the Wimbledon content team to understand and respond to fans needs in real-time, and providing valuable insight into Wimbledons impact on social media. The Command Centre will track evolving topics, provide key social statistics and heat-maps, compare onsite audiences opinions with those following matches around the world, and track key influencers who are driving the social conversation around Wimbledon.

IBM works with the AELTC to dramatically expand its infrastructure during Wimbledon fortnight, when it transforms from a tennis club in southwest London to the centre of sporting attention for the world. In 2013, the Wimbledon.com website received 19m unique visitors and 430m page views during The Championships, and IBM uses its SmartCloud Orchestrator platform to support this traffic.

“We continue to look for new ways to innovate and strengthen our leadership position in the sports industry, and one of the ways we will do this is by delivering content and information about The Championships to fans in the way that they want to consume it, no matter where they are,” said Mick Desmond, commercial director at the AELTC.

“Working with IBM is a winning partnership because it allows us to create a unique digital environment that delivers stats, video and information to our fans whenever they want it on all devices and is the next best thing to being there.”
