Microsoft has reportedly agreed to acquire GitHub, a popular code-repository company, after Business Insider first reported that the pair had been in talks for some time. The deal, according to Bloomberg, could be announced as early as today (4 June).

GitHub was last valued at $2bn in 2015, though it is not known how much Microsoft has agreed to pay for the company. The software development platform is said to have favoured selling over going public and opted for Microsoft because it was impressed with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

GitHub has been facing troubles with its own CEO, searching for a new one for the past nine months without any success thus far. Since Chris Wanstrath, the company’s co-founder, stepped down from his role as CEO, GitHub’s CBO Julio Avalos has taken charge of most of the day-to-day leadership of the company.

Microsoft is said to have initially began talks with GitHub over a possible partnership, but these talks eventually escalated into ones discussing a possible acquisition.

Microsoft, itself, is one of the biggest contributors to GitHub along with the likes of Google and Facebook – which all use the platform to store their corporate code and collaborate.
