Netflix saw its streaming membership grow to 104m in Q2 2017, up from 99m the three months prior, exceeding expectations. This growth has also seen the number of international users eclipse the number of US-based users for the first time.
The video streaming service had forecasted that it would add 3.2m new subscribers in Q2, however, it added 5.2m in the historically bad quarter. For the first half of the year, as a whole, adds were up 21 per cent year-on-year (YoY) to 10.2m.
Domestically, Netflix added 1.1m members versus 4.1m internationally – meaning the international segment now accounts for 50.1 per cent of its total membership base. The company predicts it will add 750,000 US members and 3.65m international members in Q3 2017.
The above, combined with revenue growth of 32.3 per cent YoY to $2.79bn and a net income of $65.6m, saw Netflix’s stock price lift by 10.4 per cent on Monday (17 June) – with shares jumping by $16.82 to $178.55, beating its previous high of $166.87.
