Snapchat Adds Text Chat and Video Calls

SnapchatDisposable photo-sharing network Snapchat is introducing text chat and live video calls in an update to its app.

The update is not yet live in the app stores. Until now, users could attach a text message to the photos they sent each other, but they could not engage in a two-way chat.

To start chatting, Snapchat users swipe right on a friend’s name. When they leave the chat screen, messages viewed by both the user and their friend will be cleared, but either user can tap or screenshot to save anything they’d like to keep. When in chat mode, by pressing and holding, two users can initiate a live video call.

Snapchat is independent, and late last year, rejected a $3bn (£1.8bn) offer from Facebook.
