The Mobile Majority has acquired San Diego-based Bluetooth beacon supplier Gimbal for an undisclosed sum.

Gimbal was originally incubated as part of multinational semiconductor and telecommunications company Qualcomm, under the name Qualcomm Retail Solutions, before becoming its own company in 2014. The company specialises in providing a mobile engagement and location intelligence platform used by brands, retailers, OOH networks and more.

The Mobile Majority hopes the acquisition will help its clients and partners ‘create more contextual mobile advertising, stronger audience targeting capabilities, better measurement, and true offline-to-online attribution.’

Gimbal will maintain its San Diego home and will be headed by current CEO of The Mobile Majority Rob Emrich, along with Gimbal’s existing leadership team. The two companies will work as a combined entity but will continue to service their existing client bases.

Emrich said: “The acquisition of Gimbal is a massive step toward realizing the promise of relevant advertising.”

The Mobile Majority is a data monetisation and mobile media solution that serves advertisers, publishers and media companies with relevant and effective advertising. It was named the fastest growing technology company in Los Angeles by the LA Business Journal last month.
