SpareOnePlus, an upgrade to the only emergency mobile phone to run on a single AA battery, has been demoed at CES with a range of new features. It now has a location-based service accessible through an app so users can be identified by the cell ID anywhere in the world, as well as audible numeric feedback of the number dialled and incoming callers.
A ‘talk-through’, re-sealable, humidity and waterproof bag helps the device float, prevents damage when exposed to temperatures between -22F and 140F and protects against water submersion for 30 minutes at a depth of one metre. It also has room for a few other personal items. It costs just $99.99 and is available for EMEA or the Americas.
Both SpareOne and SpareOnePlus offer 15 years of battery life when stored unused or 10 hours of voice calling if an emergency situation arises. They work independently of a cell phone carrier, with no monthly fee and take any simcard. There is also a dedicated 911 dial button to alert authorities that works without a SIM. The TorchLight on top can provide 24 hours of continuous light.
It has been recognised by CES as one of its 2013 best innovations in the Tech for a Better World category, which is new for 2013.
The device also comes in a range of colours – black or silver with a red battery screen – for the discerning adventurer.
