The Weather Channel Acquires Weather Underground

The Weather Channel is acquiring Weather Underground, which provides an online weather service via a website and a roster of iOS, Android and BlackBerry apps.

The deal, the details of which have not been not disclosed, is expected to close in several weeks time. What is apparent is that the Wunderground site and apps will continue to operate independently, while its its employees will become a part of The Weather Channel. Certain features of Weather Underground – including its Wundermap and Personal Weather Station functionality – will be brought over to The Weather Channel site.

“Everyone in the weather space is familiar with the strength of Weather Underground and its innovative method of presenting weather data. Weather Underground will add a great complementary brand to our portfolio, a brand with a distinct, loyal, and active user base that will enable us to reach a unique segment of users,” says Weather Channel chairman and CEO David Kenny. “Most importantly, this acquisition will grow the weather expertise that is central to everything we do, and will result in better forecasts and weather data for users on all of our platforms.”

Weather Underground was founded in 1995, with its wunderground.com URL being the 2,000th domain name ever registered, just one month after weather.com – The Weather Channels URL.

“As one of the founders of Weather Underground, I am excited about embarking upon this new chapter in our companys history,” said Weather Underground director of meteorology Jeff Masters in a blog post. “Having the infrastructure, resources, and content of The Weather Channel Companies will enable wunderground to create some great new products, and improve the quality and reliability of our existing content. The plan is to make both wunderground.com and weather.com stronger, by sharing content and infrastructure.”
