YouTube is set to invest $5m (£3.5m) to support the production and marketing of positive and inspirational content on its platform.
The video sharing platform launched Creators for Change in 2016 and has since partnered with 39 creators to rise against hate and promote tolerance around the world. These creators have collaborated with social impact organisations and experts in places like the UK, Australia, France, Germany, Belgium, and Spain.
To continue spreading positivity around the globe, YouTube will invest the over $5m in its creators in order to help them use YouTube’s scale to produce more inspiring content. The Google-owned platform says it will announce in the coming months who will benefit from the investment.
“We will engage more creators in the program, arm the wider YouTube community with new tools and education on how to create change, and empower more young people to use their voices to encourage positive social messages,” said Juniper Downs, head of public policy at YouTube, in a blog post. “Video is a powerful medium to open minds to new perspectives and shared experiences. Creators prove that to us every single day. And we think Creators for Change in 2018 will reach and inspire even bigger audiences.”
