Following several reports about disturbing videos involving children’s favourite characters making their way in front of kids, YouTube moved to change its policies in order to stop this from happening. Now, the video sharing platform has shared an update and further steps it will take to combat this content being viewed by children.
The Google-owned platform has said it will enforce its community guidelines more thoroughly and use technology to make sure there is faster enforcement of these guidelines. With the expansion of its guidelines, the platform has already suspended more than 50 channels and removed thousands of videos.
Since June, YouTube has made sure that ads are removed from any inappropriate videos that target children. This has seen ads removed from 3.5m videos. On top of this, the video sharing site will begin turning off all comments on videos of minors if people start posting inappropriate messages, rather than simply removing the bad ones.
Furthermore, it will ‘in the coming weeks’ release a guide for creators who make legitimate family-friendly content to make sure they produce the best quality content and provide a safe environment. YouTube’s work will also see it grow its number of experts and double the number of Trusted Flaggers it has.
“Across the board we have scaled up resources to ensure that thousands of people are working around the clock to monitor, review and make the right decisions across our ads and content policies,” said Johanna Wright, VP of product management at YouTube, in a blog post. “These latest enforcement changes will take shape over the weeks and months ahead as we work to tackle this evolving challenge. We’re wholly committed to addressing these issues and will continue to invest the engineering and human resources needed to get it right. As a parent and as a leader in this organisation, I’m determined that we do.”
