Facebook and Twitter Launch SmartEyeglass Apps Ahead of Release

Sony SmartEyeglassFacebook and Twitter have both released apps on the Google Play Store designed to work in conjunction with the Sony SmartEyeglass, ahead of even the announcement of a release date for the wearable technology.

Sonys SmartEyeglass, a prototype of which was revealed at CES this year, is thought to be releasing in some markets in the next two months, but Sony has yet to confirm when the smart glasses will be appearing on the shelves.

Despite this, both Facebook and Twitter have worked with Sony and the SmartEyeglass API which was released to produce a version of their respective social networks compatible with the new technology.

Both companies have previously produced apps for the Google Glass wearable, but Twitter had withdrawn its support even before Google announced it was ending the Glass project in its current form.

Sony SmartEyeglass will be compatible with mobile devices running Android 4.1 or higher, and is designed to be used in concert with a smartphone or tablet. Both apps require uses to have Smart Connect and the dedicated Sony app installed on their phone, and will enable users to review notifications and content using the smart glasses.

While no smart glasses hardware has managed to truly catch the publics imagination (and more importantly its commercial support) yet, the growth in wearable technology adoption means that it is surely only a matter of time before one does, and the presence of Facebook and Twitter support so early is surely a mark of confidence in Sonys attempt to crack the market.
