Amsterdam-based Whatser has updated its iPhone app with a redesign and new features. Whatser is a location-based mobile app that lets users collect their favourite places, (“spots”) share them with friends, and get suggestions on where to go based on their current location, preferences and social graph. Recommendations are based not only on where the user is, but also, on the opinions of people in their network whom they trust.

In addition to a revamped look and feel, the new version offers an activity stream, showing what friends are doing and whats happening in the user’s city. Users can upload photos of their favourite spots, and add reviews, so followers see why a spot is in their collection.

Whatser closed a round of funding from BlueBubbleLab last year, and later this month, will roll out a marketing portal for local merchants, brands and publishers to connect with consumers with contextual coupons, promotions and updates.
