Absurd Ventures opens new studio with former Ascendant Studios staff

Absurd Ventures has launched a new studio, Absurd Marin, led by Ascendant Studios founder Bret Robbins.

Based in San Rafael, California, the team consists of around 20 developers who previously worked on Immortals of Aveum. The studio plans to expand as development moves forward.

The new developer is currently working on a narrative-driven adventure game based on a new, undisclosed IP. This project is distinct from Absurd Ventures’ other work, which revolves around a universe called A Better Paradise.

Both ventures are still in the early phases of development, according to the announcement.

Ascendant Studios, the developer behind Immortals of Aveum, faced significant challenges after the game’s poor sales in 2023. In response, the studio laid off 45% of its workforce in September of the same year.

Absurd Ventures, founded in June 2023 by former Rockstar executive Dan Houser, is a multi-media studio focused on storytelling across various platforms, including games, animation, books, and podcasts.

The company has since released a 12-part audio series, A Better Paradise, and is also developing a graphic novel series titled American Caper.
