AltStore PAL is now free, fueled by Epic Games grant

AltStore PAL, a third-party app store for iOS users, is now free, courtesy of a grant from Epic Games.

This means no more annual subscription fees for new users, and existing subscribers can renew without cost.

The service, which launched in 2019, provides iPhone users with a way to access apps beyond the official App Store

Its significance and popularity grew with EU antitrust laws requiring Apple to permit third-party app stores.

Recently rebranding as AltStore PAL, the platform initially featured only apps by creator Riley Testut but has now expanded to include third-party apps.

Apple traditionally imposed a core technology fee (CTF) of €1.50 annually on unofficial app stores, which AltStore PAL covered through user subscriptions.

However, thanks to fresh funding from Epic Games, this fee is now fully funded, making the app store free.

This grant highlights Epic Games’ commitment to driving innovation in app distribution and improving accessibility for users.

Existing subscribers won’t face renewal charges as AltStore PAL shifts to a free model.

Creator Riley Testut has also suggested there will be future perks for loyal users, although details have not been confirmed.

With Epic Games’ backing, AltStore PAL’s transition to a free service could prove to be a significant milestone for third-party app stores, promising enhanced accessibility and innovation for iOS users.
