MacPaw launches Setapp Mobile alternative app store in EU open beta

MacPaw has introduced the open beta for Setapp Mobile, one of the first public alternative app stores.

The Setapp Mobile beta offers a handpicked selection of 50 lifestyle and productivity apps, giving users access to a range of premium software through a single subscription.

This approach is designed to streamline app discovery while ensuring developers are compensated fairly, based on the performance and usage of their apps within the marketplace.

Initially launched as a marketplace for macOS applications, Setapp gained popularity as a go-to platform for desktop users.

In May, the company expanded its reach by introducing Setapp Mobile in a closed beta phase.

MacPaw’s decision to roll out Setapp Mobile follows the EU’s recent implementation of the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which allows for the creation of alternative app stores, giving users more freedom beyond Apple’s App Store.

“Setapp Mobile is not just an app marketplace; it’s a smarter, more transparent ecosystem. We are offering users a clean, intuitive experience that eliminates the typical app clutter, while also creating a sustainable, fair platform for developers,” said Oleksandr Kosovan, CEO and Founder of MacPaw.

Mykola Savin, MacPaw’s Director of Product Management, also explained how input from users during the closed beta has been instrumental in enhancing Setapp Mobile.

“Thanks to our early users, we’ve made significant strides in improving stability and expanding our app library. The number of apps has doubled since the closed beta, and we’re excited to gather more insights as we move forward,” he added.
