Amazons IMDb launches free video streaming service

IMDb FreediveAmazon-owned movie website IMDb has launched a video streaming service, enabling users to watch TV shows and movies such as Fringe, Heroes, The Bachelor, Without a Trace, Foxcatcher, Memento, The Last Samurai, and more without having to purchase a subscription.

The ad-supported service, called IMDb Freedive, gives users in the US access to the TV shows and movies for free via laptop, personal computer, and on all Amazon Fire TV devices. Based on feedback, IMDb will decide whether to make the platform available on its mobile apps.

IMDb already had original series available on its site in the form of content like The IMDb Show, Casting Calls, and No Small Parts, as well as featuring trailers and interviews. All of that content will now be included within Freedive.

Freedive also comes with a feature very familiar to Amazon Prime Video customers called ‘X-Ray’, which provides information about cast, crew, trivia, soundtracks and more.

“Customers already rely on IMDb to discover movies and TV shows and decide what to watch,” said Col Needham, founder and CEO of IMDb. “With the launch of IMDb Freedive, they can now also watch full-length movies and TV shows on IMDb and all Amazon Fire TV devices for free. We will continue to enhance IMDb Freedive based on customer feedback and will soon make it available more widely, including on IMDb’s leading mobile apps.”
