Russia finds Apple to have abused its dominant position in the app game

It appears that Apple may be forced to make changes to its App Store due to a regulatory ruling, however, that it won’t be US or EU regulators clamping down on the tech giant, despite an ongoing probes into the way the business operates. Instead, it looks like Russia is the country that will make Apple change its ways.

The Russian competition watchdog, FAS, has concluded that Apple abused its dominant position within the app market through its App Store and will demand the company resolve the regulation breaches found, according to Reuters. Apple plans to appeal the ruling.

The FAS verdict cited the need to download iOS apps via the App Store and that Apple ‘unlawfully’ reserved rights to block any apps from its App Store.

The investigation was launched by the FAS in response to a complaint from cybersecurity company Kaspersky Lab, which said a new version of its ‘Safe Kids’ app had been declined by Apple’s operating system. The belief is that Apple did this due to the release of version 12 of its own parental control app, Screen Time, having similar features.

Apple argues that it removed several parental control apps because they were putting the privacy and security of users at risk.
