Apple Music is on track to overtake Spotify in the US this summer

Apple MusicApple is closing in on Spotify in the US music streaming market and looks set to eclipse the service as earlier as this summer, if current growth rates continue.

Apple Music’s subscriber base is growing at around five per cent each month, compared to Spotify’s two per cent growth, in the US, according to The Wall Street Journal. This US growth has contributed to Apple’s now 36m paying subscribers around the world, increasing from the 30m it crossed back in September 2017, though exact figures for individual countries are not revealed by the company.

The news of Apple Music’s likely overtaking in the US will come as a blow to Spotify as it prepares to go public at some point soon.

However, despite Apple Music’s growth and the impending overtake in the US, Spotify still has nearly double the number of paying subscribers that Apple Music has – revealing it had reached 70m paying subscribers just last month. Furthermore, due to Spotify’s ad-supported, free tier, it boasts in excess of 140m users overall.
