BlaBlaCar to acquire French bus service Ouibus

OuibusFrench carpooling app BlaBlaCar has made an offer to acquire Ouibus, the bus division of the France’s state-owned national railway company SNCF, as it moves beyond carpooling for the first time.

With the acquisition, Blablacar intends to expand its offering with bus services, which will also be open to other local bus partners and operators across Europe. Ouibus’ network connects 300 cities in France and Europe, transporting over 12m passengers so far. Using that, and its more than 30,000 meeting points, BlaBlaCar says it will look to develop shared mobility across all axes, optimise its vehicle occupancy rates, and offer door-to-door solutions for its users.

“We are excited to consider joining forces with the OuiBus team to enable travellers to find diverse mobility solutions on BlaBlaCar that suit their range of needs,” Nicolas Brusson, co-founder and CEO of BlaBlaCar. “This project supports our ambition to grow a broad mobility offer across Europe, combining cars and buses. The collaboration with SNCF would also be a promising turning point in the development of intermodal and door-to-door mobility, a common ambition which we are uniquely positioned to deliver together.”

On top of the impending acquisition, BlaBlaCar has received €101m in investment from SNCF and existing investors. The funding is intended to help BlaBlaCar toward becoming the ‘go-to’ marketplace for road travel around the world.

Meanwhile, BlaBlaCar and SNCF plan to build an intermodal travel solution in France, bringing carpooling and buses together with trains.
